It came ready to use with windows but converting it was a piece of cake. Maximum Capacity Store all your favorite photos, music, movies and important files on this high capacity, portable drive. Rated 5 out of 5 by cheap dude from perfect i bought this to backup photos. I cannot think of any cons. Yes, you do have to spend a little time reformatting for mac but it was no problem doing so. I use it with a 24 iMac under Snow Leopard and have been very happy with it.

Like most other people who reviewed this product, I gave up on the software that came with it and it made my life easier.

My MacBook Pro hard drive was running out of space, so I needed somewhere to dump files, folders, and media that I don't regularly access to free up some space. I would probably recommend that a Mac user who wants to plug and play get an external hard drive that is pre-configured for Mac use.

It does operate as quickly as one would expect, given that it has a USB 2 interface. I have had the first one for two years without a problem. One of my wdbacy5000ahk-01 was to be able to exchange images with my daughter. However, I do not like the Smartware interface that wd installs onto your computer to manage files.

I use them to make duplicate back ups of my Mac Book. It is removable with much difficulty. When I travel, one always goes with wdbacy5000abk-10 and the other into the safe deposit box. It is totally Mac compatible and will work with Time Machine and everything, but the process to get there is not completely clear. I expect it to be reliable. One nice thing is that, for some reason, the Smart Ware does not take up as much of the drive as it did on the previous one. Use it with USB 2. I'll see how long it will hold up my previous portable hard drives of different brands had to be replaced every few yearsbut seems to do its job well. For additional security, there is pssport option for password-protected encryption of your personal files.

After my experience with this device, the decision was easy.
