This didn't help at all in my case. Sun Dec 04, 8: What's weirder is that the rattling sounded like it was coming from the CPU or NB fan, not the case fan. I tried everything, but the floppy drive was not even reading on powerup, so there was no way to flash the original bios that I had backed up.
If you have any suggestions or have had similar problems please let me know. As this isn't really reproducable in a lab in a hour, it's not recorded.

I could be wrong about the source of the noise though. I haven't seen an exclusive relationship between processor load and the rattling though. XP cannot change its HAL hardware abstraction layer to support the second core without registry editing or a reinstall.

If so, that should be on as well. What were my mistakes other then using a ECS board?

What's the "bios nforce4-a993 you mentioned? Has anybody else had problems with flashing the bios on this board? Sometimes it's very quiet for several hours, then it starts to rattle or vibrate, I don't know.
I can only think of a couple of reasons for the dead boards.

Normally I wouldn't do this, since I flashed the bios, but they sold a dual core combo that does not work unless you flash the bios, so I feel justified.
Sometimes overheating, but modern CPUs are quite tolerant of that.
